Propellerhead
Possibly the funiest book about flying ever written! This true story is an amazing tale of a man who has no interest in flying but thinks that it would help him attract women, he only later discovers how wrong that idea was, but by then the flying bug has bitten. The story takes us from novice, through learning to fly, buying a plane with a group of excentric like minded characters and through various adventures, generally resulting in repairs to the plane, if not complete replacement. If ever the authorities discover the real names of the pilots involved then there will some licences lost pronto! This tale introduces us to a range of characters, from the despairing flying instructor, the poseurs of the advertising world, the love of his life "lift girl", to the mad but inspiring experienced flyer Lester.
This book will have you laughing from start to finish, it's so good that you might even read it in one sitting! It's certainly the funiest book about flying I have ever read, it's just proves that life is funnier than fiction, but scarier too.

The Light Aircraft Data Book
If
you are interested in the lighter side of aviation then this inexpensive book
is invaluable. It covers over 600 light aircraft and light helicopters. There
is a photo of each one plus a 2 view line drawing plus some basic stats and
a short commentary. The aircraft are indexed by design features, eg high wing
or low wing, nose wheel or tail dragger etc, making this book a handy guide
for aircraft recognition. There are other books on light aircraft, but I can
think of none with the such coverage of the huge variety of types in the UK.
In addition the A5 size makes this a handy field guide.
OK, so the pictures are small and black & white, but the variety packed into this book makes larger pictures impossible. The incredible range means that only the most dedicated enthusiast is likely to have come across all of these aircraft, so leafing through this book will introduce most to many new aircraft never seen before. The fact that it is now in it's third edition is proof that this book is selling well and developing as it goes on.

These
days so many airliners look alike, but this has not always been the case.

Shorts Solent flying boat, right through to Concorde and the 747.
Coverage is international including the USA, UK, France, Russia and others. Each aircraft has 2 pages devoted to it including 3 half page glossy photos and a half page of text. British Light Aircraft 1920-1940
Let's
not beat about the bush, this is an expensive book, but it's also a great
book. This book traces the development of the aircraft of the period,
the industry, the firms. It also demonstrates how the development of the
engine was a key factor that puch the aircraft in particular directions.
If you are an enthusiat for antique light aircraft then this is a must
have book. The author, Arthur Ord-Hume demonstrates a massive insight
into these issues on every page. This book describes in detail the crucial
events that formed the industry and created the aircraft we know and love.
In addition to familiar aircraft, only the most expert will fail to find
new types that they have not previously come across.
The book starts at the end of the first world war and describes the unusual trading conditions that occured and explains the effect these had on the light aircraft industry, both for and against. Other chapters tackle subjects such as, the aircraft, the manufacturers, the engines and many other topics, but in every case it is more than dry facts, it is also the history, the reasons, the pro's & cons. This book takes the facts and weaves them into a history that can be understood and which makes an interesting story where we understand what happened and also why. Despite the price this book represents good value for money. Arthur Ord-Hume is working on more books in this series, if he keeps up this superb quality then we are in for a treat.

British Commercial Aircraft 1920-1940
This
is the second book in a planned series by Arthur Ord-Hume. It is an
amazing book, a masterwork in fact! So little survives of pre-WW2 commercial
aircraft in either museums or film that many of us know little of commerical
aviation in that period. This book will enlighten you to the golden
age of aviation that existed, when commercial aviation was pure luxury
and routes were being pioneered. Yet there are parallels with current
commercial aviation with smaller aircraft being used as feeder airliners
bringing passengers together to the larger aircraft for the longer routes.
Again, this is an expensive book, but superb value for money.
